Equality is union business. That's why we support marriage equality and it's why we're campaigning for a YES vote. Our Committee of Management endorsed this resolution:

HACSU reaffirms its commitment to all forms of discrimination in our workplaces and in broader society. Our members deal with the negative effects of discrimination every day, whether working in the community sector or in our emergency departments.

HACSU condemns in the strongest possible terms a postal survey on marriage equality as proposed by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and the Federal Coalition government. We encourage all of our political representatives, regardless of party membership, to do what they were elected to do - vote on this issue in Parliament. An overwhelming majority of Australians support marriage equality.

HACSU along with other unions have always fought for equality - in our workplaces and in our communities. We fight against injustice and discrimination.

The decision to proceed with a non-binding, non-compulsory and expensive opinion survey will allow for hatred and bigotry to be directed at LGBTIQ members and their families, and we cannot stay silent while this happens.

However given that there is a genuine possibility that the postal survey may go ahead, HACSU commits to working with other unions, stakeholder groups, likeminded political organisations and the broader LGBTIQ community to campaign for a "YES" vote.

We commit to continuing to campaign in support of marriage equality no matter what the result.
