Yesterday, HACSU took the extraordinary step of applying to the Fair Work Commission to assist in resolving an ongoing dispute with Southern Cross Care at their Yaraandoo facility in Somerset.

The Fair Work Commission has called a conference at 4pm today where HACSU will seek for Southern Cross Care to stop using their workforce as scapegoats.

Since the damning interim report delivered by the Aged Care Royal Commission, Southern Cross Care management have embarked on a mission to target aged care workers for the failures identified by the Royal Commission.

Despite a willingness to work constructively with Southern Cross Care to identify meaningful and lasting solutions to the issues, our members continued to be targeted for systemic failures and underfunding in the sector.

Quotes attributable to HACSU Assistant State Secretary Robbie Moore:

“For the last few years, aged care services have faced growing demand without the commensurate increases in resourcing. This now means that residents miss out and aged care workers face more and more pressure every day.”

“Aged care workers should not be blamed for the sector’s systemic failure to demand adequate funding and resources.”

“Southern Cross Care are not taking the opportunity to learn or do better from the report that was so critical of them. Instead, they are attempting to shift the blame onto some of the most caring and hardworking people you’d find anywhere.”

“HACSU will not stand by and watch as our members continue to have the boot stuck into them by an organisation that is in no position to be critical.”

“We are hopeful that common sense will prevail and the top levels of Southern Cross Care management will stop targeting their workers for things beyond the workers’ control.”
