Here's what you need to know

It’s against the law to discriminate against workers based on age, but sometimes ageism can be hard to identify at work – that’s why we’re here to give you some more information about what to look out for.

Age discrimination at work is when an older worker is unfairly treated – usually based on stereotypes or prejudices about older people. Ageism might be institutionalised in something like your work’s policy of recruitment, or it could be relational like inappropriate “jokes” or comments from co-workers.

When ageism isn’t dealt with it can create an intimidating work environment and interfere with work performance, morale, and opportunities for older workers.

If you feel you or a co-worker might be experiencing age discrimination, be sure to document the incidents with times, dates and specifics and note any witnesses to the events.

Age discrimination, like discrimination of any kind, is something you should never have to deal with in the workplace.
