Workers have let us know they don’t have an issue with the cameras being installed at the wings of Rubicon Grove, but they’re concerned about the rumour that management watch staff on the cameras.

We’ve written to Louise to clarify the issue and remind her that cameras in facilities should only be looked at if there is an issue with a resident or staff member. They are not there for managers to micromanage the day-to-day duties of staff.

Here’s Louise’s response:

The cameras, were installed in the hallway of each wing, I believe in response to money going missing from the residents, this was before my time. The cameras are not monitored, and are only viewed if there is an incident that requires reviewing of the vision. I don’t have the time or inclination to sit all day and monitor the staff doing their duties, and at no time have I insinuated that there was any need to do this, but have many times praised the staff for the work they do every day for the residents.  

Louise has also provided us with the records of her logins for the camera system since she commenced work at Rubicon Grove. It indicates that Louise has only logged into the system three times in that period, and she said these were due to previous incidents in the facility.

We hope this helps to address workers’ concerns. Remember, it’s okay to have cameras in place, but they need to be used for the safety of residents and staff, not as spyware.
