Understaffing is a workplace safety issue at Glenara Lakes

Many workers at Glenara Lakes have contacted us recentlyabout occasions when they have been extremely short-staffed.

HACSU have beenforced to enter the worksite on a Work Health and Safety entry due to suspectedviolations of the WHS Act, which directly affected the safety of workers on thefloor.

During our visit, it was evident that Glenara Lakes were short of care, nurses and leisure and lifestyle staff. As a result, workers were unable totake breaks and many staff were extremely stressed because of the workload.

We're also aware that Southern Cross Care management have chosen not tobackfill care staff with agency staff.

This is not acceptable.

We've written tothe Executive Manager of Residential Care, questioning the whereabouts of thenew employees who were interviewed for positions at Glenara Lakes a while ago.The onboarding process seems ridiculously slow, taking between 1 to 2 monthsfor a worker to start.

We've made it clear to SCC that under the WHS Act, theymust address the psychosocial hazards caused by understaffing, which clearly isnot happening. It’s not good enough to just say sorry – SCC are obliged by lawto put in all measures to fix short staffing issues.

SCC need to let me knowwhat measures they are implementing and what the process for the onboardingis. We will hold them accountable for their actions.
