We’ve heard that genU sent a “she’ll be right, nothing to see here” memo yesterday. We don’t want to alarm you, but you should beware the wolf in sheep’s clothing with these contracts.

What genU are proposing could leave you without any certainty or security around your days or hours of work.

The contracts they have given you would mean they will be able to dictate when you’ll be working with just one week’s notice if you sign them as-is. It’d make it impossible for you to plan your life.

You have a one-time opportunity now, before you commence with genU, to change the wording of the contract so it locks in your days of work and your start and finish times unless you agree to change them.

The offending part of the contract is in Schedule 1:

“Hours of Work:  You acknowledge that you may be required to work different number of hours per week due to the changing operational demands of GenU and the nature of your position.  Because you are a shift worker for the purpose of the Agreement, you agree to perform your ordinary hours of work at any time on Monday to Sunday, so long as genU pays the applicable shift loading.  You will be notified on the days of the days on which you work and the starting and finishing times of each shift at least 1 weeks in advance of the shift roster.”

Our advice is that you strike these words out and replace them with words we have already suggested:

“The number of hours to be worked and pattern of work (days of the week and starting and finishing times each day) that I agree with genU are as in accordance with the attached roster.”

You should also attach a copy of your existing roster to the contract.
